Bible Verses About Children

Children are treated in Scripture as gift, responsibility and example. Jesus repeatedly uses them to correct adults about status.

The passages below cover blessing, teaching and the limits of parental control, each linked to its chapter.

The passages

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

Context: The language is inheritance and reward — something received rather than produced.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Context: A general pattern about formation; proverbs describe what usually happens, not what is promised.

But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”

Context: Jesus overrules his own disciples' crowd control to make room for children.

These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

Context: Teaching is described as conversational and constant, woven through an ordinary day.

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Context: A caution to fathers about provoking, alongside the instruction to nurture.

He took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

Context: A small physical detail: he took them in his arms and blessed them.

Questions to sit with

  • What are the children in your life learning from how you live, not what you say?
  • Where do you need patience rather than control this week?
  • How could you bless a child today in words they will remember?
