Hope in the Bible is not optimism. It is confidence directed at a specific future, usually held by people whose present is difficult.
Several of these verses are famous enough to be printed on mugs. Reading them in their chapters restores their weight.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.”
Context: Written to exiles who had just been told to settle down in Babylon for seventy years. The hope is real but long-range.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Context: A blessing at the close of Paul's argument that Jewish and Gentile believers belong at one table.
“It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”
Context: These lines about mercies new every morning sit inside a book of grief over a destroyed city.
“Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Context: Paul traces a sequence — pressure, perseverance, character, hope — rather than promising a shortcut.
“Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.”
Context: The psalmist speaks to his own discouragement in the second person. It is a model for self-talk, not denial.
“let’s hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.”
Context: The reason given for holding on is the faithfulness of the one who promised, not the strength of the grip.
