How the selection works

Without a topic filter, a book is picked in proportion to how many verses it contains, then a chapter and verse within it, so no book is over-represented. The generator skips a small number of very short fragments and genealogy lines that make no sense on their own, and never repeats the verse you are already looking at.

With a topic filter, the draw is limited to references our editors have already checked and written about, so you get passages that hold up outside their chapter.

What it is not

A random verse is not a personalised message, a prediction, or guidance about a decision you are facing. It is a way of encountering parts of the Bible you would not have chosen. Treat what appears as an invitation to read the chapter, not as an answer.
