The passages
“He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”
Context: Even young people faint — strength is given rather than summoned.
“We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;”
Context: Pressed but not crushed: a list of limits rather than a claim of ease.
“Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls.”
Context: Consider him, so you do not grow weary and lose heart — endurance by looking at something.
“My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Context: Honest about failing strength, and about what remains after it.
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
Context: A closing line: your labour is not in vain, written after the resurrection argument.
