Bible Verses About Gratitude

Thanksgiving appears in Scripture as a practice more than a mood. People give thanks in prison, in exile, and before an outcome is known.

These passages are short enough to memorise and specific enough to act on.

The passages

Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

Context: Notice the wording: thanks in all circumstances, not for all circumstances.

By David. Praise the LORD, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name! Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Context: David lists specific benefits rather than thanking God in general — a useful model for your own list.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord. Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Context: Gratitude is tied to community singing and to ordinary work done in Jesus' name.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

Context: A refrain repeated through the psalm as different groups of rescued people tell their story.

One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice. He fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks; and he was a Samaritan.

Context: One of ten healed men returns. The story treats gratitude as the exception worth noticing.

giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

Context: Thanksgiving as a habit of ordinary speech rather than an occasional ceremony.

Questions to sit with

  • Write down five specific benefits, as Psalm 103 does, rather than one general thank you.
  • Who has helped you recently that you have not actually thanked?

A prayer

God, thank you for the things I stopped noticing. Make me the one who turns back to say so. Amen.
