Bible Verses for Someone Who Is Sick

These passages are for reading aloud at a bedside, sending in a message, or praying quietly for someone you love.

Scripture sits alongside medical care rather than replacing it. Keep following the advice of the people treating you.

The passages

Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Context: Prayer for the sick described as something the community comes and does.

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

Context: A picture of God sustaining someone on a sickbed — specific and physical.

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Context: Strengthening and upholding, useful for the frightening hours rather than the hopeful ones.

Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases,

Context: Forgiveness and healing named together as benefits to remember.

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Context: Paul's thorn was not removed; grace was given instead. An honest passage for long illness.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

Context: An invitation to rest, addressed to the burdened.

Questions to sit with

  • What does this person actually need from you today — presence, practical help, or quiet?
  • What would you want prayed for if it were you?
  • Who else is carrying this with them?
