Joy in the Bible is sturdier than cheerfulness. It survives prison letters, exile and hardship, and it is repeatedly tied to God's presence rather than to good news.

“Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.””
Context: Said to people weeping as the law was read; joy is described as their strength for rebuilding.
“You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.”
Context: Joy is located in a presence and a path rather than in circumstances.
“I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.”
Context: Jesus explains the purpose of his teaching about the vine: that their joy would be complete.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Context: A blessing at the end of a long argument, joining joy and peace to trust.
“Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!””
Context: Written by a prisoner, which makes the repetition less glib than it sounds.
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
Context: Not joy because of trials, but joy in view of what endurance produces.
