The passages
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Context: The observation is about tone: a soft answer changes what happens next.
“bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.”
Context: Forgiveness measured by what has already been received rather than by the offence.
“Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”
Context: Written to a quarrelsome church as a correction, which is how it reads best in conflict.
““If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.”
Context: Jesus' instruction to go directly and privately first, before anyone else is involved.
“If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.”
Context: 'As far as it depends on you' acknowledges that peace is not always within your power.
