The passages
“He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Context: The keeper who neither slumbers nor sleeps — written for travellers on a dangerous road.
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.”
Context: A promise of sweet sleep attached to wisdom and sound judgement.
““Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.””
Context: The invitation to rest is addressed to those already worn out by carrying things.
“when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches. For you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.”
Context: Remembering God through the watches of the night, when the mind will not stop.
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones.”
Context: A direct word to the anxious early riser and late worker about what striving cannot achieve.
