The passages
“For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well. My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.”
Context: Being formed and known before birth — the classic birthday psalm, and a tender one.
“‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’”
Context: The Aaronic blessing, spoken over Israel for centuries and still used today.
“So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Context: A prayer for a wise heart, which suits a birthday better than a wish does.
“May he grant you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your counsel.”
Context: A blessing for someone's plans and heart's desire, from a psalm before battle.
“For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.”
Context: Long life connected with wisdom rather than luck.
“Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Context: A list of benefits worth remembering when counting another year.
